Understanding
some of the aspects of the human visual mechanism can be very helpful
in designing both live action and CG elements.
In terms of the theatrical presentation of stereoscopic 3-D images,
the human visual mechanism may well be the most important component.
The most important reasons are often the least recognized.
I recall an incident that was physically painful for the audience,
although this was not realized at the time. A stereoscopic 3-D movie
was being shown, with some very impressive depth effects. The audience
was cheering the dramatic impact. But, I noticed something that did
not seem right. I could feel a “pulling” sensation around
my eyes. So, I removed the stereoscopic viewing glasses to observe
the screen image directly. My suspicions were immediately confirmed.
Parts of the left eye-view and the right eye-view were vertically
misaligned to each other.
Immediately after the show ended, you could hear very positive comments
from members of the audience on how much they enjoyed the show. Then,
as they approached the lobby, the general mood seemed to change.
